Chilled beams

PIR integrated into Multi Service Chilled Beams

Application requirements
In office spaces user satisfaction and productivity depend on indoor climate conditions and their control. The role of office work is changing and requires new thinking in space design. The focus is on the balance between interaction and autonomy.

The trend is away from the highly structured hive (production line) and cell (quiet individual units) towards dens (noisy open space) and clubs (a variety of work settings). These spaces are supported with centrally shared places – touchdown facilities - where silent knowledge of the workers is shared. (Source Flexibility Ltd., UK) As a result, users appreciate good indoor climate conditions in all of the usage situations. That requires easy flexibility also from the HVAC systems.

Offices have high cooling requirements, low humidity loads and moderate ventilation demands. In addition, users have different personal preferences in terms of thermal conditions.

Optimal solution

Halton office solutions based on chilled beam system offer high user satisfaction by creating optimal conditions in all seasons and by enabling conditions to be individually adjustable also in an open-plan office. Chilled beam features enable overall thermal conditions to be maintained at desired level by continuously controlling cooling and heating capacities by Halton control system. Local adjustments are done by Halton Velocity Control. Optimal air quality is achieved by adjusting primary air flow rate 1.5 – 6 l/s, m2 with Halton Air Quality Control.

Halton chilled beams have in-built flexibility for fast and cost efficient room layout changes. Open plan-office can be easily changed into meeting room or an office room, or vice versa. Primary air flow rate adjustment is done by Halton Air Quality Control. Velocity conditions are adjusted by Halton Velocity Control e.g., in a case of partition wall being located near the chilled beam. Cooling and heating capacity of a beam can also be reset without influencing the operation of other beams by Halton Velocity Control or by combination valve.

The solution is based on chilled beam system that is very competitive in terms of life cycle performance. Lower air and water flow rates reduce investment costs while efficient beams reduce energy consumption. Also easy flexibility reduces churn costs.

Chilled beams combining ventilation, cooling and heating and, if desired, other building services suit the interior design of the space. They can be installed in a suspended ceiling or exposed and also the outlook of the units can be tailored to suit the interior.
